Setting Realistic Goals

Without goals, you may feel as though you’ve got nothing to work towards and no clear finish line. You need this clear finish line to indicate when you have reached a target and done as much work as you needed to get done.

Setting goals as a writer is extremely important

When setting goals, be sure to be SMART. This means making your goals specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. Making your goals SMART means you will work more efficiently and effectively. These goals will help you become a better writer and you will feel prepared in your career.

Specific:

Making your goal specific means it is easily identifiable and simple. You need your goals to be as specific as you can make them to ensure you can achieve them. Unspecific goals are more likely than not too vague or big for you to achieve; therefore, making them as specific as they possibly can be is very important.

Measurable:

Creating a measurable goal means you can clearly see when the goal is achieved and how long it will take. If you are making goals that you aren’t meeting, through measuring them and seeing this you can see that you need to make the goals simpler.

Attainable:

Continuing on from this, having attainable goals means having realistic goals. You need to make realistic goals on how much you think you can get done in the amount of time you want to give yourself; for example, 5 pages a day. If you have to adjust your goal, by increasing or decreasing it, that’s perfectly okay. Just try to make your goals as attainable as they can be.

Relevant:

Your goals being relevant means that they are directly related to your overall vision or goals. If your overall vision is to write a book, your goals running up to this finishing line will be writing. Think about anything else you might need once you’ve written a book and factor these into your goals.

Time-bound:

Remember, you only have a certain amount of hours in a day. Your goals should be time-bound, meaning you can identify a period of time a goal can be reached. Much like being measurable and attainable; but you state a period of time for a certain goal.

If you create any goals for yourself; make them SMART. These goals will prepare you for reaching your finishing line and allow you to work effectively and reach your attainable goals.
